Public Holidays

Who doesn’t love a public holiday, whether its celebrating Santos Populares or indulging in Christmas festivities, we’ve got you covered!

Portugal has a few national public holidays (feriado public) and many extra per municipality, usually connected to their patron saint.

Lisbon is blessed with having Saint Anthony’s day the same week as Portugal’s National Day, where the city celebrates santos populares with street parties (arraiais) in every neighbourhood all week long (well, all of June really). Many locals use this time to take vacation or visit family in other parts of Portugal.

Whether you’d like to do the same or prefer to avoid busy airport/road times and higher flight prices, knowing these dates can help you with your travel plans.

(It is worth noting, unlike some countries, if a public holiday falls on a weekend there is no compensation day off on the Monday. Also, the only day off over Christmas is the day itself.)
