Medical Specialists
Published January 2026
Some things fall outside of the expertise of a GP / PSP. While it’s not possible for me to cover every single medical need, I can point you in the direction of the most common, with this small list of personal recommendations, all whom speak English.
Depending on where you’ve relocated from, you may be used to needing a referal for a specialist but that isn’t the case here. You can usually book direct! Be aware that as this city has boomed appointments are becoming harder to get so don’t leave any medical attention for later.
I cover general medicical appointments here, and many of the general practices mentioned there also allow for appointments with specialists if you can’t find what you need below.
Optical
Vision Lab
Despite being in the affluent location of Avenida da Liberdade, they have a decent variety of price points. Of course, that didn’t stop me from falling in love with an Isabel Morant pair and consequently paying more than I ever have! The service was great - friendly, professional but not pushy. I was informed of all my options in regards to the actual lenses, letting me decide without any pushing for more $.
Bestie Tip: They have an optician on the bottom floor, but I went in with the pair I was using and they took my prescription strength requirements from them.
MultiOpticas
A well-known chain in Portugal, similar to Specsavers, with more affordable choices in a familiar environment. They always seem to have some sort of promo sale on glasses.
For contacts, this is a good option for those with a more common prescription as they should have them in stock already. However, if you have a specific brand you love or an uncommon strength like me, they will need to order in. And that will require you to be far more organised than myself, and go in at least 2 weeks before you use your last set of dailies. (They will tell you one week but everytime it was nearly 3.) Then there’s only a 50% chance they’ll even tell you they’re ready. BUT, you can see my online contacts further down to avoid such nonsense.

Opticalia
Simiar to the above, but in my opinion, more elevated with better brands. Excellent service - my impression is they are franchised (and the owners are instore).
Bestie Tip: At both Opticalia & MultiOpticas you can book a free eye consultation at a store of your choice via their website.

Lentes De Contacto
Lensesdecontacto.pt is who I’ve been using for over 3 years now to order my contact lenses online. Easy, efficient, and delivered to your door in 3 or 4 days. The range of contacts is huge, not just brands but they also cater for specialty needs like multifocal.
Bestie Tip: If you are able to claim optical on private healthcare, their invoices include all the details needed.
Dental
The Lisbon Smile Clinic.
This is the dentist I always recommend, that I also discovered based on a recommendation. Modern and pristine with enough english speaking-staff. I have had normal bi-annual check ups, bi-annual cleans by the hygenist, an emergency filling replacement when an old one fell out. Prices are not exorbitant.
Note: They also do teeth alignment with the Invisalign brand here but I recommend elsewhere for this as I had some issues with the representative dentist.
Physiotherapy
Clínica Desporsano
In my opinion, the best physio clinic in Lisbon. The receptionists are really lovely and the doctors are fantastic. They will put together a whole plan to ensure a full recovery from an injury with care and diligence. I have sent a few friends there now all with great feedback.
Orthopedic & Sports Injury
Clínica Lambert
I sincerely doubt there’s a better clinic for anything musculoskeletal. Here they have a full range approach instead of getting trigger happy with the scalpel which we found at other places (always get a second or third opinion!).
For anything knee related I can sing the praises of my husband’s surgeon, Dr Guilherme Barroso.
Ear/Nose/Throat
A good ENT is worth their weight in gold and my friend says Dr Inês at Cuf Tejo is nothing short of magical.
Gynocology
Between my friends and I, I can confidently recommend a few gynos. Be aware, good gynecologists in Lisboa tend to book up suuuper quickly.
I am looking for dermatoligists, acupuncturists, menapause specialists and more dental. If you have a specialist of any field you wish to recommend, please get in touch
