MEDICAL SPECIALISTS
Updated March 2026
Some things fall outside of the expertise of a GP / PSP. While it’s not possible for me to cover every single medical need, I can point you in the direction of the most common, with this small list of personal recommendations, all whom speak English.
Depending on where you’ve relocated from, you may be used to needing a referal for a specialist but that isn’t the case here. You can usually book direct! Be aware that as this city has boomed appointments are becoming harder to get so don’t leave any medical attention for later.
If you specifically need dental or optical, the page you need is here. I cover general medicical appointments here, and many of the general practices mentioned there also allow for appointments with specialists if you can’t find what you need below.
My personal recs have headings in blue. Recs directly to me from others (friends, watsap groups or readers) have titles in brown. I hope to grow this into a comprehensive, reliable directory, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any suggestions of your own.
Physiotherapy
Clínica Desporsano
In my opinion, the best physio clinic in Lisbon. The receptionists are really lovely and the doctors are fantastic. They will put together a whole plan to ensure a full recovery from an injury with care and diligence. I have sent a few friends there now all with great feedback.
Orthopedic & Sports Injury
Clínica Lambert
I sincerely doubt there’s a better clinic for anything musculoskeletal. Here they have a full range approach instead of getting trigger happy with the scalpel which we found at other places (always get a second or third opinion!).
For anything knee related I can sing the praises of my husband’s surgeon, Dr Guilherme Barroso, who gave exceptional care.

Dr Nuno Moura
Recommended in one of my watsap groups : “My husband was operated by Dr Moura at Cuf Tejo (broken elbow) with success — surgeon for professional athletes if I recall correctly”.
Ear, Nose, Throat
Dr Inês Alpoim Moreira
A good ENT is worth their weight in gold and one of my best friends says Dr Inês at Cuf Tejo is nothing short of magical.
Gynocology
Dr Filipa Castro Ribeiro & Dr Cristina Nunes
Directly from close friends, see the two docs below. Be aware, good gynocologists in Lisboa tend to book up suuuper quickly.
Dr. Filipa Castro Ribeiro - Hospital da Luz
Dr. Cristina Nunes - Lusíadas Hospital Lisbon
Dr. Paula Tapadinhas
Here is a gyno recommended from someone in my watsap groups, who is also a doctor herself: “I can finally recommend a really great gynaecologist, she has the style of Doctor that reminds me of me! thorough and helpful!”
Pancreatic (& other) Cancer
Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre
I had a Bestie reader reach out about including this one, and I’m soooo glad he did. It’s a subject dear to my heart as I lost a dear friend to pancreatic cancer (back in Australia). I did know that Champalimaud is widely considered the best facility in the world for this specific cancer, with state of the art equipment and pioneering research, but [fortunately] haven’t met anyone who had used it. The Bestie who emailed has a wife undergoing treatment there for late-stage pancreatic cancer and wants you to know that this facility is nothing short of amazing:
“It’s a scary time but Champalimaud helps make it so much easier. It the most non-hospital hospital I’ve ever been to. It’s a wonderful place. It’s like an art museum no hospital smells or even hospital scrubs. Each area has its own non hospital uniform. Reminds me of a cruise ship. When you walk in there’s no waiting they walk up to you with a hand held computer and greet you and give you a hug.”
Please send healing love for this dear couple into the universe.
Champalimaud Clinical Centre
As part of this facilty, they have eight other specialty units dedicated to treatment and research on selected major types of cancer which are - Breast, Lung, Urology, Digestive, Gynaecology, Haemato-Oncology, Neuro-oncology and Dermatology. They also have a Neuropsychiatry unit.
I have been contacted by friends who have friends in remission from breast cancer who get check ups there, and the Bestie above mentioned the same. I once met a Neurologist from the U.S.A, who works in the research department of Champalimaud and only had glowing things to say in terms of the facitility from his end, from the tech, to the support, to the ethos.
Bestie Notes: There is also a National Cancer Helpline: 213 619 542
Cancer drugs in the public sector are free.
I am wanting to make this resource as comprehensive as possible! I am looking for recommendations for dermatoligists, phsycologists, acupuncturists & menapause specialists. If you have a specialist of any field you wish to recommend, please get in touch .
