Solo Dinner Lisbon

Lisbon’s Best Solo Dining

You’ve just arrived, you’re here alone and you want to go out for dinner. While you of course can eat anywhere and this is a welcoming city, for me I prefer counter and bar seating. It’s a tad more comfortable than being plonked alone at a table for two or more in the middle of the restaurant, while surrounded by groups. If you’re the same, I have made you a list of my top five places that fit that bill, so you can enjoy your solo time in the best way.

Inside a busy restaurant with a bar counter and several tables, diners are seated and waitstaff are serving; modern decor with hanging pendant lights.

Galeto

Since 1966, Galeto is such a beloved icon of Lisbon, if it ever had to close there would be city-wide mourning. The entire restaurant is one lonnnng high-stooled counter that snakes around, like a maze. It’s quite clever (you’ll see what I mean when you go there) and a big part of it’s charm. This means everyone is sitting side-by-side, no tables of two or groups (except outside). The best way to describe it is a retro snackbar serving croquettas, burgers and portuguese dishes.

They are open all day, everyday, until 3am!

Taberna Dos Novos Tempos

This is as local as it gets. As unassuming as it is welcoming. A tiny place without any dining table, just a small counter of high stools at the bar (including a half round as in the picture, my favourite spot) and a lower line along the window. It’s a one woman show, where Dona Ana takes your orders, pours your drinks, and cooks the food. Everything is from scratch, by hand, with love. She speaks no English but I promise, she will take excellent care of you. Let her treat you well and enjoy the local individuals popping in after work for a beer and a quick bite while they share and discuss the day’s events with her. This is what Portugal life is all about.

Noobai Rooftop Dining Lisbon

Noobai

For casual rooftop dining, I suggest Noobai. The level just below the one you enter is best for our solo besties, with a nice couple of rows of round cafe tables with the chair facing the views (a la parisien street cafe style). The food is decent enough (I recommend the duck), the service can be a little lacklustre, however a glass of wine with these vistas is a nice way to spend an hour or two.

By The Wine

The interior design is wonderful, the bar seating is situated under a large stone arch, covered in wine bottles. The wine selection is on point (as the name suggests) and every dish I’ve had there has been fab. I also rate the vibes and service highly. Bookings essential.

Peixola

Also mentioned in my Seafood Restaurant recommendations , the majority of the restaurant is a long bar that surrounds a prep and drinks area. Staff in that section will make conversation and take great care of you. Think modern, but unpretentious.

Honorable Mention : O Frade

Technically outside of Lisbon city in Belem, everyone I have sent here has loved it. And I am sure you will too. A modern, family run restaurant, the interior is bar seating only that surrounds a prep area where you can watch the expert staff do their thing. Every dish has the utmost attention to detail and vibes are great both at lunch and dinner. Bookings essential.
